Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipality of Solidaridad has handed out a fine of more than 50,000 peso to a developer for illegally felling more than 100 trees.
Antonio Terrazas Lara, director of Infraestructura, Desarrollo Urbano, Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático says the tree devastation was found on a five-hectare spread of land on Avenida Paseos del Mayab.
He says a developer felled more than 100 trees, some of which were protected, noting it as one of the largest jungle damaged areas in the municipality this year. The report of the tree-cutting was made by a citizen.
“We were passed a citizen report of a clearing that we gave ourselves the task of investigating. They did not have the permit or corresponding authorization, so closing seals were placed,” he said.
The Ayuntamiento de Solidaridad issued the 50,000 peso fine. Terrazas Lara invites locals to approach city hall to report any suspicion of irregularity activities that construction companies could be committing.
