Holbox, Q.R. — Despite efforts, a sperm whale located off a beach of Holbox on Wednesday has died. Municipal police commissioner, Federico Pool Che, reported that around 10:00 a.m. they learned of the landing of a sperm whale in the west of the island.
Several island volunteers arrived and attempted to return the whale to deeper waters, while local veterinarian Morelia Montes Barahoma, who was working in direct contact with Dolphin Discovery veterinarians in Puerto Aventuras, treated the mammal. Unfortunately, it died.
Volunteers noticed that the whale had hit its head on several occasions from being stranded in too shallow of water. The hits are an unofficial theory as to a cause of death.
The mammal was buried on the beach near where it was found.
