City of Cancun adds 100 cleaner air options for public transportation

Cancun, Q.R. — The city of Cancun has added a new fleet of 100 hybrid public buses to its streets. The new total of cleaner air public transportation options has increased from 38 to 138 units.

Governor Mara Lezama led the presentation and launch of 100 new Yutong hybrid buses at Malecón Tajamar Monday. During the inauguration, she announced four new routes that are being incorporated into the new system in a stage of expansion and modernization of Cancun’s public transportation.

The city added 100 new hybrid buses Monday October 5, 2026.

The addition will significantly strengthen the system’s operational capacity, she said.

The new routes include Route 17, Villas del Mar 3–KM 0, Villas del Mar 3–Nichupté Bridge and La Rehoyada–Hotel Zone.

Their implementation is planned to be phased in during the last quarter of 2026, with routes ranging from 45 to 75 kilometers, depending on the specific route.

Governor Lezama announced that Route 17 will begin with a free week from the 19th to the 26th. From November 2nd to 9th, a free week will begin on the Villas del Mar 3–Puente Nichupté route. From November 16th to 23rd, the Villas del Mar 3–KM 0 route, and from November 30th to December 7th, the La Rehoyada–Hotel Zone route.

The four new routes have an estimated demand of 80,188 passengers per day. Studies included in the technical specifications also estimate an approximate savings of 19 minutes in travel time, along with greater service regularity and improved frequencies.

With the addition of the four new routes, the system projects to close 2026 with six routes, gradually consolidating a model that integrates fleet, routes, fares, payment methods, technology, and supervision to offer a more organized and reliable public transportation system, explained Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the Quintana Roo State Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO).

Together, these four new routes have an estimated beneficiary population of 322,821 people and include coverage in 118,911 homes, 225 schools and 9,963 economic units.

Governor Lezama emphasized that expanding the Quintana Roo Mobility System means offering people more transportation options and better connections between where they live and their main daily destinations, as well as moving toward shorter waiting times and more comfortable, safe, accessible, and reliable journeys.
