Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A leaning ceiba has been corrected in central Playa del Carmen with the use of heavy machinery. On Thursday, city officials arranged for the tree to be straightend and secured after it started to lean due to June’s heavy rainfall.
Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, the Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, said the tree was corrected after a citizen report the week before.
Várguez Ocampo said last week they received a report about the tree that began to lean with exposed roots. The Ministry of the Environment carried out the repositioning of the tree to ensure its life cycle and “to be sure that it is not going to fall and cause an accident,” she said.
The tree, located on 10th Street and 38th was lightly pruned to balance its weight before being repositioned in a more stable base. Várguez Ocampo said that balancing and repositioning should prevent the tree from falling in the future.
