Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Caribbean Business Coordinating Council (CCE) called on the federal government to restore the electronic visa for Brazilian citizens. The Council says state tourism is being affected due to the elimination of the procedure.
The region has seen a significant drop in Brazilian tourism since the visa change. Cancun International has gone from three direct flights to one due to a drop in Brazilian passengers.
That last direct flight from Brazil into Cancun is being cancelled.
“As a business sector, we express our concern regarding the drop in the Brazilian tourism market, which becomes alarming due to the announcement of the cancellation of the last direct flight from Brazil to Cancun,” the Council announced in a press release.
In August 2021, the Ministry of the Interior issued a decree eliminating the electronic visa process for Brazilian citizens arriving in Mexico as tourists. The electronic visa was replaced with a manual application process, which has discouraged travel due to its time and cost.
Brazilians are opting instead for sun and sand destinations that do not have that process.
