Car totaled, driver seriously injured in early morning Playa del Carmen highway accident

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An early morning highway accident north of Playa del Carmen left one car destroyed and its driver in hospital. Emergency services were called to the scene by passing motorists who stopped to help the female driver.

According to early information, the woman was traveling from Cancun to Playa del Carmen when she made contact with the rear of a dump truck. The driver of the truck is alleged to have changed lanes on a blind corner. When the woman took the corner, she collided with the rear of the truck.

The accident happened near the Punta Maroma area around 4:20 a.m. Saturday.

Accident witnesses said the driver of the dump truck kept going, heading toward Playa del Carmen.

The woman behind the wheel was found trapped in her car. Playa del Carmen firemen were requested to help free her for hospital transfer. National Guard Highways were also requested at the federal highway accident scene to flag traffic and direct the removal of the car.
