Captain of vessel drowns in Easter tragedy off Punta Herrero

Punta Herrero, Costa Maya — The captain of a boat drowned over the Easter long weekend when his vessel capsized. The accident happened off the small fishing village of Punta Herrero near Punta Allen.

The boat was traveling in the vicinity of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, south of Tulum on Good Friday around noon when the accident was reported. The small boat, carrying three, quickly experienced problems due to the strong winds and high waves.

Elements form the Navy were sent to assist the three who went overboard after their vessel took on water and sank. However, when they arrived, murky water from the choppy seas hindered rescue efforts.

Two people pulled from the sea alive were transferred to hospital for medial treatment. The third person, identified as Adán R and captain of the boat, was pulled from the water and declared dead by drowning. Adán R was a local fishermen and member of the Cozumel Fishing Cooperative, but lived in the village of María Elena.
