Cancun, Q.R. — Neighbors in a residential area of Cancun held a man they allege responsible for attempting to steal electrical cables. The citizen’s arrest happened after several residents in SM 39 went outside to inspect a reason for a noticed electric fluctuation inside their homes.
While looking around, they found two men behind a plaza cutting wires from a pole. Both men fled, but one was caught in SM 40. He was held by residents until police arrived. Taken into custody was 31-year-old Armin N for cable theft. He was found in possession of several meters of rolled up wire along with cutters and a climbing harness.
Earlier this month, a CFE cable theft from the Mayakoba substation left thousands in Playa del Carmen without electricity. In a statement, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) explained that acts of vandalism to the CFE underground network near the Mayakoba Substation led to the suspension of service to almost 11,000 users.
