Cancun-based plane bursts into flames on Yucatan highway

Kaua, Yucatan — A small plane bound for Cancun was forced into an emergency landing on a Yucatan highway. The two men on board had taken off from the Chichén Itzá Airport midday when the incident happened.

The pilot-instructor and one student were on board the small plane when they were forced to land on the Pisté-Valladolid highway. Shortly after landing, the plane burst into flames. There were no injuries reported.

The plane belonged to a Cancun-based aviation school. The incident happened shortly after noon Monday. Authorities have not said an official cause for the fire.

The burning plane caused the two lane highway to be closed in both directions while authorities dealt with the downed plane. Personnel from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (FAA) were also dispatched to investigate the cause of the incident.

Highway traffic was at a standstill for several hours due to the burning plane and subsequent arrival of emergency vehicles. The FAA are still working on investigating the official cause of the failure that forced the pilot to land on the highway.
