Bacalar, Q.R. — Traffic was backed up Saturday on a stretch of Bacalar highway after a bus caught fire. Firefighters were on scene after motorist reports of the burning bus.
Thick black smoke could be seen from a distance by motorists who were forced to wait in their vehicles due to a road closure. Emergency services arrived to a fully engulfed bus approximately two kilometers from the community of Xul-Há in the municipality of Bacalar.
The bus driver was heading in the direction of Bacalar when his vehicle began to smoke. The driver of the bus, along with his passengers, quickly evacuated the bus and requested help.
An emergency team arrived to put out the fire, although a majority of it had already been consumed by the time they arrived.
Traffic on the Bacalar-Chetumal lane was at a standstill while the fire was brought under control. There were no injuries reported. Faulty wiring has been tentatively blamed for the fire. An investigation into the exact cause is underway.
