Brigade from National Forest Commission work to put out Holbox forest fire

Holbox, Q.R. — Brigade from the National Forest Commission (Conafor) worked to put out a wildfire on Holbox Sunday. Thick smoke was spotted by area tourism providers at sea who made the report to authorities.

Tourism boats passing the reserve reported the fire to authorities August 24, 2025.

Several plumes of thick smoke was seen late Sunday morning off the coast by boaters passing the portion of the island near Cabo Catoche.

State Civil Protection said they responded to reports of the fire and worked into the afternoon to fully extinguish it. According to Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil, the fire was detected in La Ensenada within the Yum Balam Reserve.

A Conafor (Comisión Nacional Forestal) brigade of 10 forst firefighters were sent to the area to battle the fire. Authorities did not say how large the forest fire was or what started it.

In a brief statement, Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil said “State Civil Protection Coordination reports that a fire was reported Sunday in the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Reserve in Holbox, in the area known as La Ensenada.

“Brigades from the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) responded to the firefighting effort. Members of the Conafor and emergency services will strengthen the firefighting efforts to completely extinguish this blaze.”
