Backseat passenger seriously injured in highway crash outside Playa del Carmen

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A highway crash between a private car and a public combi sent one to hospital in serious condition. The crash took place on the Federal 307 Sunday afternoon south of Playa del Carmen.

Both vehicles were heading to the heart of Riviera Maya when the accident happened. According to preliminary information, the driver of the black car was in the process of making a U-turn when the public Tulum combi happened upon the slowed down vehicle.

The National Union of Peasant Transporters (Untrac) passenger van crashed into the rear of the car at highway speed. The van was located nearly 50 meters ahead the crashed car. The black car was pushed over the highway median and partially into the oncoming lane of traffic.

One person from inside each of the involved vehicles was reported injured. Paramedics were part of the 4:00 p.m. emergency response team to the accident scene. A female passenger in the back seat of the black car was rushed to Playa del Carmen hospital in serious condition.

Highway traffic lanes were reduced for several hours while police, firemen and National Guard dealt with debris and clean up from the accident.
