Bacalar, Q.R. — The town of Bacalar is on its way to having its first shopping plaza. The three-level building will offer space to two dozen businesses. Refugio Cano Gómez who is part of the construction project, says the building is around 80 percent finished.
He says it will be the first modern shopping plaza in the municipality of Bacalar, with an elevator, food court and view of the town.
Cano Gómez says the building will offer 24 commercial spaces over its three levels which will help boost the local economy.
He noted that the new building replaced an old leased premises and also responds to the need to modernize the urban image of Bacalar without losing its identity as a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town).

“With the Maya Train and the projects that are transforming Bacalar, we natives also want to contribute to this modernization process, but preserving our essence,” Cano Gómez stated.
He also pointed out the support received by Bacalar Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez to promote infrastructure that accompanies the economic and tourist growth. Cano Gómez did not provide a possible completion date for the building.
