Bacalar taxi driver recovering from assault and robbery

Bacalar, Q.R. — A Bacalar taxi driver continues to recover in hospital after being physically assaulted during a robbery. Taxi driver Rubisel “C” was transporting two men to the town of Chacchoben when the attack took place.

Just before the driver reached the community, his passengers forced him to pull over on a dirt road where they assaulted him with a gun before robbing him of his personal effects and vehicle.

He was found by authorities and rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Rubisel “C” is a member of the Suchaa (Sindicato de transporte público) of Chetumal. Suchaa representative Juan Diego Polanco confirmed that the taxi driver is recovering in a private clinic in Chetumal after National Guard officers found him injured on the road.

He was located by patrolling National Guard Tuesday afternoon near Chacchoben suffering from injuries. He was taken to the Bacalar community hospital for initial medical attention and later transferred to the Carranza Clinic in Chetumal for further recovery.

Union officials requested assistance from police who launched an operation in the area to locate those responsible and recover the stolen vehicle. However, after more than half an hour of searching, the operation was suspended without any results.

Following this, police officers mounted a major operation in the surrounding area to try to locate those responsible, however, no arrests were reported.
