Bacalar, Q.R. — A local pedestrian was killed Friday after being hit by a tourist bus whose driver fled after realizing the man was dead. National Guard were at the scene first after several area residents reported the 10:20 p.m. accident.

A group of witnesses stopped along the side of the road in the community of Limones after realizing what had happened. The pedestrian, identified as local resident Roberto “N”, was killed.
According to witnesses, the driver of the bus got out of his vehicle to check on the pedestrian. When he believed him to be dead, he fled leaving his passengers behind. The driver was transporting tourists on a bus belonging to a Riviera Maya tourism company.
Witnesses reported those on board the bus also got off once their driver disappeared. It is not clear how many passengers were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
Members of the National Guard and the State Attorney General’s Office arrived at the scene to take statements and remove the body.

Authorities have not revealed the identity of the bus driver or his whereabouts. The company that owns the bus has not issued a statement on the accident.
