Bacalar man attempting to burn out beehive accidently sets camper on fire

Bacalar, Q.R. — A property owner trying to burn out a beehive ended up setting his vehicle on fire Friday. The man was attempting to get rid of an established beehive using fire when he accidently set a vehicle on fire.

Bacalar firemen were called to a waterfront address on 36th Street after reports of a vehicle fire. At the scene, firemen found a camper fully engulfed in flames.

The man received minor burns trying to put the fire out himself. February 20, 2026.

According to the man, he was trying to burn a beehive that he found inside the camper when the flames spread. Within minutes, the entire camper burst into flames, sending black smoke high into the air.

Area residents quickly called emergency services, who responded and were able to stop the fire from spreading.

The man, who has not been identified, suffered burns while trying to put the fire out himself.

Strong winds worked in favor of the fire Friday, helping flames move fast.

While they were able to save the area around the fire, they were not able to save the camper. Bacalar traffic along Costera Avenue was disrupted while firemen were at the scene.
