Authorities to hold CFE meeting on Playa del Carmen disruptions for new Cozumel submarine cable

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A meeting will be held this week between City Council and the CFE regarding work along Playa del Carmen Boulevard. The CFE project has been disrupting traffic flow from Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue to 4th Street North.

The Secretariat of Sustainable Territorial Planning, Hernán González, will meet with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) this week to follow up on the substation project. It will be their second meeting regarding the work being done to install a submarine cable from the Playa del Carmen mainland to the island of Cozumel.

Solidaridad Mayor Estefanía Mercado Ascencio is also expected to participate in the meeting after numerous citizen complaints about the road disruption. Traffic has been effected from Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue to 4th Street North where the CFE substation is located.

The disruption is part of a project to install an underwater line that will supply energy to part of the island of Cozumel. During the installation project, access to Playa 88, one of the points where the work will be greatest, will likely be temporarily closed.

Hernán González, Secretaría de Ordenamiento Territorial Sustentable, says steps have been taken in the matter and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has been called to address the citizen concerns. “We are already working so that this project does not affect public services so much,” said the official.

He said that although proposals have been put forward, they are still pending review and approval by the municipal authority, which is why Mayor Estefanía Mercado Ascencio will also be attending this week’s meeting.
