Authorities talk PDC man down after climbing 70 meter tower

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Authorities were able to talk a man down from a Playa del Carmen CFE tower Saturday night. The unidentified man climbed the 70 meter tower threatening to jump.

Emergency personnel were at the base of the tower on CTM Avenue and Playa del Carmen Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. in response to 9-1-1 reports. According to municipal Civil Protection, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) were notified of the incident and able to cut power to the tower during the rescue.

It was Civil Protection and local firemen who scaled the tower, eventually rescuing the man who had climbed to the top. The incident lasted more than two hours.

Raúl Alberto Tassinari González, Secretary of Citizen Security, said the power cut affected parts of Cozumel and Playa del Carmen during the rescue effort.

Late Saturday night, Solidaridad Civil Protection reported on the incident saying “Civil Protection and firefighters managed to rescue a man who tried to jump from an electrical tower more than 70 meters high on Playa del Carmen Boulevard.”

The unnamed man was medically evaluated at the base of the tower before being handed over to authorities.
