Authorities rescue live coral from parcel area of Mérida airport

Mérida, Yucatan — In the parcel area of the Mérida International Airport, members of the National Guard found four “living coral organisms of different species” without documentation indicating their legal origin.

The coral, which were found packaged in plastic bags with water, are protected by the General Wildlife Law as well as the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species.

Elements of the National Guard found the specimens sealed in plastic. They had been shipped from Veracruz. They were rescued and handed over to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection for their care and corresponding procedure.
