Authorities continue search for woman swept out to sea

Salina Cruz, Oaxaca — The search for a 21-year-old woman who was swept out to sea by strong currents has been ongoing since Monday without luck.

On Sunday afternoon, the young woman was swimming with friends at Playa Punta Conejo in the port of Salina Cruz when they say she was swept out to sea by currents.

Jesús González Pérez of la Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil (CEPCO) says that la Secretaría de Marina- Armada de México began their search Monday after bad weather Sunday prevented any rescue efforts. Choppy seas and high swells hampered their rescue attempts along the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

He says that at this point, officials are looking for a body with the help of local police and volunteer fishermen. The missing woman has been identified as Marcela S.E. originally from the Port of Salina Cruz but living in the city of Oaxaca.

She and three friends arrived at the port Friday to spend the long weekend. Her friends alerted authorities to her disappearance after she failed to return from a swim.
