Bacalar, Q.R. — At least two people were left with serious injuries Monday after their car was broadsided by a semi. The accident happened on the federal highway outside the town of Bacalar early Monday afternoon.

Witnesses watched as the double long semi hit the rear driver’s side of the compact car, driving it off the highway and down a steep embankment. The car came to a stop after slamming head on into a metal gate of a concrete wall.
Several motorists stopped along the highway and ran down the embankment to help those inside the car. Two people in the front seats were reported injured. There was at least one person in the back seat of the car.
The accident was reported shortly after noon along the federal highway near a Bacalar lagoon entrance. It is not clear if the driver of the compact car was slowing down to enter a side road when it was hit by the semi.

National Guard and paramedics arrived to provide assistance. Traffic in the area was slowed down mostly due to debris scattered along the highway from the accident. There was no word on the driver of the semi alleged responsible for the accident.
