Güemez, Tamaulipas — At least 13 people were killed Sunday after an accident between a semi trailer and a van. The fiery crash happened along a section of the Hidalgo-Zaragoza highway in the state of Tamaulipas.
Tamaulipas Public Security Secretariat confirmed the accident and death toll at the time on social media Sunday.
“State Guard personnel attended to an accident registered Sunday morning between a trailer and a van after both units caught fire after impacting,” said Tamaulipas Public Security.
The accident occurred at kilometer 80 of highway 83 of the road that connects Hidalgo and Zaragoza.
According to the initial report, State Guard elements responding to the accident scene reported being unable to distinguish the cab of the semi due to the severity of the wreck.
Secretary of Public Security Tamaulipas posted on social media that “Civil protection authorities are assisting and so far 13 people have been reported dead. The circulation is not obstructed, however it is recommended to drive with caution and respect the speed limits as well as the signs.”
Authorities have not released a cause for the accident which happened on a straight stretch of paved highway.
