Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A man armed with a long-barreled weapon was wounded during a shootout with police Sunday. The unnamed man was hit when police returned fire after their vehicle was shot at.

At least four bullets penetrated the windshield of the police unit as officers arrived in response to a citizen 9-1-1 report of gunfire. The shooting happened Sunday evening in the city’s western subdivision known as San Juan Tadeo.

Responding officers were met by a spray of gunfire as they entered the area around 6:30 p.m. Police requested backup at which time additional units arrive and proceeded to repel the attack. The lone gunman was shot by police and taken to hospital under guard.

According to the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), an investigation into the Sunday incident is already underway.

“The Playa del Carmen Citizen Security Secretariat reports that following a 911 report of gunshots in the San Juan Tadeo area, Municipal Police officers responded immediately and were attacked by an armed individual.

“The assailant, who was carrying a long-barreled weapon, was wounded during the confrontation, arrested, and taken for medical attention. Authorities are already conducting the corresponding investigations in accordance with established protocols,” the SSC of Playa del Carmen said in an official statement.
