AMLO says his government is no longer interested in Banamex due to lack of time

Mexico City, Mexico — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says his government is no longer interested in trying to acquire Banamex since there is not enough time. Instead, he says, the next government would have the opportunity to consider it.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that his government is no longer interested in trying to acquire Banamex as had been proposed in the past.

He said initally, there was interest because it is important to have a government bank to manage funds, government accounts and save commission fees, but now, there is not enough time.

“The purchase takes a year then the operation also takes time,” he said adding that “a new government could do it and it wouldn’t be a bad deal.”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will finish his term as President in 2024.
