American woman to remain jailed after airport authorities locate handgun inside suitcase

Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas — An American woman is to remain in jail during her trial after authorities found a gun in her luggage. During a preliminary hearing, a Chiapas judge ordered Lilian “W” to remain imprisoned for possession of a 22 LR caliber firearm.

The Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office in Chiapas is moving forward with charges of carrying of a weapon without a license, a federal offense in Mexico.

According to the investigation, Lillian “W”, a U.S. national, was detained by elements of the National Guard inside the Ángel Albino Corzo Airport after securing a case with a 22 LR caliber firearm with its respective charger and with six cartridges.

The carrying case and firearm were located inside a suitcase belonging to Lilian “W” earlier this month. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, her trial is set to begin in six weeks.
