Agua Prieta, Sonora — An Arizona man was arrested at the border after a search of his vehicle revealed hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Elements of Mexico’s Guardia Nacional made the arrest late Wednesday night at the Agua Prieta customs office in Sonora.
“In compliance with the National Public Security Strategy and the Zero Impunity policy of the federal government, elements of the National Guard (GN) in coordination with personnel from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) in Sonora detained a U.S. citizen who intended to bring more than 1,300 useful cartridges into national territory,” the statement said.
“Inside the truck behind the seats they located several cardboard boxes containing more than 1,300 useful .50 caliber cartridges, of which he could not prove legal possession, so he was arrested,” Guardia Nacional reported.
The illegal ammunition was located inside a white pickup truck with Arizona plates. At the time of the inspection, the driver identified himself as an American citizen.
The man, along with the vehicle and cartridges were placed at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry Agency of the state for continue the corresponding investigations.
