Cancun, Q.R. — Frontier Airlines says they will begin direct nonstop Puerto Rico to Cancun flights starting May. Flights will land at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in the city of San Juan (SJU) from Cancun International three times a week.

The new direct flights between Puerto Rico and Cancun is the result of an increase in tourism in both destinations. Flights are set to begin May 25, 2023.

Frontier Airlines says the direct flights into Cancun is part of their major expansion service to Puerto Rico. The ultra-low fare carrier announced the new Cancun route along with the addition of seven new routes from the U.S., all of which, are set to begin in May.

In a statement, the airline said as part of the expanded service, they will begin offering flights to Ponce, Puerto Rico for the first time, along with expanded service to San Juan and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. With the expansion, Frontier will serve more routes to Puerto Rico than any other airline.

The new routes bring the airline’s total number of nonstops to Puerto Rico to 19 in a major growth push designed to meet the increased demand among leisure travelers.

“Puerto Rico is a hugely popular destination for leisure travelers as well as the large population of Puerto Ricans residing in the U.S. who enjoy returning to the island to visit friends and family,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president, commercial, Frontier Airlines.

“The addition of new nonstop routes between Puerto Rico and seven cities in the United States and Cancun significantly expands the options for visitors to the Island,” he added.
