4 million peso sewage expansion project started in central Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A 4 million peso project to expand sewage coverage in central Playa del Carmen is underway. Aguakan says they are laying approximately 1,200 meters of 8, 10 and 12 inch PVC pipe for the sanitary drainage network in the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood.

The project, which will benefit 29,487 people, began at the end of September on 34 Norte and Constituyentes avenues, 35 Norte and 40 Norte Streets and on Constituentes Avenue, the section from 35 Norte to 45 Norte Streets.

An investment in infrastructure to increase sewer service coverage will allow for more efficient collection of wastewater, which is taken to treatment plants where it is cleaned and reinjected 100 percent clean into the water table, avoiding the contamination of our natural resources such as cenotes, beaches and wetlands, the company reported.

The project is scheduled for completion in June of 2025. Photo: Aguakan October 3, 2024.

“Playa del Carmen has grown very rapidly in the last decade and we celebrate contributing to this growth, making the essential investments to bring the necessary water, distribute it, collect it and treat it before returning it clean to the environment,” said Omar López, Planning, Projects and Works Manager of Aguakan.

Aguakan says the project should be finished in June of 2025, which they add, is part of their five-year plan for the city to ensure the provision of basic services of drinking water, drainage and sanitation.
