Cancun, Q.R. — For the 2019-2020 season, the state of Quintana Roo has qualified for 20 Blue Flag beaches with 10 being in Cancun.
On July 1, eight new beaches around the state will be able to raise a Blue Flag signifying their beach is in prime condition with 12 beaches re-qualifying for the status. The cleanliness of the sand along with water quality and on-site facilities are only some of the factors taken into consideration by the European organization when qualifying a beach.
The new qualifying beaches are in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Solidaridad and Puerto Morelos.
On flag-raising day, new beaches that will see the Blue Flag beach status include the Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun, Iberostar Cancun and Live Aqua Cancun hotels, Playa Albatros and Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, Vista al Mar in Puerto Morelos and Iberostar Tukan & Quetzal and Playa Paraíso in Solidaridad.
Beaches that qualified for Blue Flag status renewal include Ballenas, Chac Mool, Coral, Playa Delfines, El Niño, Las Perlas and Playa Marlín in the municipality of Benito Juárez. Kantenah Bay, Playa 88, Punta Esmeralda and Xcalacoco in Solidaridad and Playa Centro on Isla Mujeres.
The results were announced at the Blue Flag Mexico National Jury headed by the Federal Secretariat of Tourism. Across Mexico, a total of 57 beaches will fly the Blue Flag certified beach status for the 2019-2020 season.
