12 rescued from burning yacht off Baja California Sur

Isla Espiritu Santo, Baja California Sur — Members of the Navy of Mexico report the rescue of 12 from a burning yacht off the coast of Baja California Sur.

The rescue took place New Year’s day in waters between Isla San Francisquito and Isla Espíritu Santo of Baja California Sur by members of the navy who responded to the report of a boat fire on the Don Pepe. The rescue occurred in response to a call for help from the Captaincy of Puerto de La Paz.

Elementos de la Secretaría de Marina-Armada de México (Semar) immediately deployed and began a search and rescue mission, locating the burning Don Pepe. They report that on board they rescued 12 people, six of whom were minors.

In a statement, la Secretaría de Marina-Armada de México said all 12 were treated by personnel from the Naval Hospital of La Paz, who determined everyone to be in a good state of health. They were transferred to a waiting vehicle and returned to their hotel.

There were no human injuries reported in the fire, however, authorities were unable to save the yacht.
