Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Authorities say 11 people were injured, some seriously, in a combi rollover Wednesday morning. Motorists traveling the federal 307 north of Playa del Carmen came across the accident scene around 7:00 a.m.
Emergency services from the municipality of Solidaridad attended the crash site where they located the overturned public transport unit. Several passengers inside the combi riding in seats with open windows suffered extensive injuries to their arms and shoulders due to the rollover and subsequent skid.
Solidaridad Civil Protection confirmed 11 injured in the early morning accidnet near the Blue Bay Hotel, approximately 14 kilometers north of the city of Playa del Carmen.
Passing motorists stopped to help the injured while they waited for the arrival of emergency services. Traffic along the federal highway heading toward Cancun was severely backed up due to the accident and arrival of responding emergency vehicles.
The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) reported on the accident Wednesday morning. “The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), along with medical personnel and the National Guard, provided assistance to the passengers of a van that overturned on the Playa del Carmen-Puerto Morelos federal highway, near the Blue Bay Hotel.
“So far, several injuries have been reported, one with serious injuries. Those affected received medical attention and were transferred to hospitals.” Police warned motorists to use extreme caution when driving in the area.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Secretary of Civil Protection and Firefighters also released a statement saying “rescue personnel from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters provided pre-hospital care and transportation to 11 injured people following a vehicle accident on Federal Highway Kilometer 307.
“After receiving the report, firefighters and paramedics arrived at the scene where a public service van with vehicle registration number 128 had overturned. They immediately began operations to provide medical assistance to the injured and transport them by ambulance to the hospital,” the Sría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos de Solidaridad reported.
A burst back tire has been the said cause of the single vehicle crash. The back driver’s tire of the combi van burst while traveling the highway, causing the driver to lose control and the combi to roll and skid, leaving 11 with injuries.
